Why We All Need Powers of Attorney (Yes, Even You)

January 22, 2026

Diane Kotkin

A power of attorney sounds like something you only get after three meetings with a lawyer and a personality transplant. In reality, it’s one of the most boringly responsible — and surprisingly comforting — documents you can have. Which is exactly why we all need one.

Think of a power of attorney as a “just in case” plan. Not a “doom and gloom” plan. More like a “life is unpredictable and I don’t want chaos” plan.

If you were suddenly unable to make decisions for yourself — because of illness, injury, or even just being temporarily out of commission — someone has to step in. Without a power of attorney, that someone is often… the legal system. And the legal system is many things, but “quick and personal” is not one of them.

A power of attorney lets you choose your person. The one who knows your preferences, your values, and that you would absolutely not want your money spent on something weird. It’s the difference between saying, “I trust you” and leaving it up to a judge who has never met you and definitely doesn’t know your coffee order.

There’s also the everyday convenience factor. Powers of attorney aren’t just for emergencies — they’re useful for life logistics. Traveling? Recovering from surgery? Just don’t want to deal with paperwork? A power of attorney lets someone handle the boring but necessary stuff so you can focus on getting better, resting, or living your life.

And no, having one doesn’t mean you’re giving up control. You’re actually keeping it. You decide who helps, what they can do, and when their authority kicks in. It’s proactive, not pessimistic.

The truth is, powers of attorney aren’t about expecting the worst — they’re about preventing unnecessary stress for the people you care about. They turn a potential crisis into a manageable situation and replace confusion with clarity.

So yes, powers of attorney are deeply unglamorous. But they’re also quietly powerful. Like backups, seatbelts, and passwords you actually remember — they don’t make life dramatic. They make it smoother.

And honestly, future-you will be very grateful you took five minutes to be this responsible.
